IMDA AWARD 2023 - Honorable Mention
Automotive rear end cover
Backlit rear panel concept made of two plastics
For the third time, KURZ was able to impress the judges of the IMDA (In-Mold Decorating Association, USA) Award with an innovative IMD solution. The thin-film technology specialist was recognized with an ‘Honorable Mention’ for its backlit rear panel concept. In a single process step, the advanced 2K-IMD process produces an immediately installable rear component with precisely defined backlighting, 3D light effects, light barriers, and numerous other surface options.
When the rear end makes a statement
In the mobility of tomorrow, light will become the key communication technology for road users. Together with subsidiaries BURG DESIGN, PolyIC, and SCHÖFER, KURZ has developed an exterior concept made from an innovative 2K material blend that can communicate with other road users using backlighting and 3D light effects. The rear panel also supports assistance systems for autonomous driving. With numerous other decoration options such as Hot Stamping, digital printing, and sensor integration, customer-specific design and durability requirements as well as special series can also be implemented.
Two components, one process
A particular highlight is the highly efficient IMD process in which two components can be processed in a single process step. The customer receives a directly installable, translucent rear section with a homogeneous surface and seamless decoration measuring around 850 mm in length. Three-dimensional component geometries and structures for 3D lighting effects are also possible. Production using the 2K IMD process reduces CO2 emissions by combining several process steps into one single step. In addition, this rear panel can be recycled in one piece and then used again as a post-industrial material.
